When to Unfollow: Social Media Rules

We’ve all seen it… That social media post that makes us cringe on the inside. That post that makes us feel our worst, roll our eyes or fill ourselves with doubt. These are all signs that it is time to unfollow and apply a few Social Media Rules to our business tactics and our personal life.

As of 2019, there are 3.2 BILLION Social Media users. Which likely means that even your grandma is familiar with the ole’ Facebook. I remember the day when you had to have a college email in order to access Facebook. I also remember the day when I started getting friend requests from my mom’s friends.

But let’s move on to one of my favorite platforms of use… Instagram. There are over 1 BILLION active Instagram users which supports a HUGE business market for us creatives. (I talk more about how to monetize this potential income through Social Media in my Craft to Cash Course.) However, 71% of these active Instagram users are under the age of 35.

This gives us a great opportunity on the business side, but on the side of the consumer, this can equate to a struggling entrepreneur trying to make a name for themselves.

How do we know when to UNFOLLOW?

When our screen time is less social and more detrimental to our creative mind. That is when we know its time to make some changes. As a business owner, I use my social media accounts to promote my retail business, my creative coaching business, and my family. If I find myself over-consuming, I will find that I lose my own creativity in a world of resources and unlimited information.

I also have to remember, it’s not personal.

I think too often I feel guilty about hitting that awkward unfollow button, but the reality is the Instagram user with 30k followers that I am trying to “be like” isn’t concerned about my decision to unfollow. So why am I?

Therefore, if you find yourself obsessing what they have and what you don’t, it’s time to unfollow and FOLLOW some social media rules.

When to Unfollow: Social Media Rules

  1. Unfollow those people that fail to inspire you. Follow others who leave you encouraged, motivated and ready to conquer your goals.
  2. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. This world needs the real you, not a bunch of the same people, doing the same thing.
  3. Promote more than you Consume. As a creative business owner, you must promote your business more than you consume the social media of others. Don’t waste time scrolling.
  4. Be Social with REAL people. Remember the best businesses consist of real engagement. Develop real relationships with people outside of social media that matter and help you live your best life.
Having real relationships with real people.

There you have it. Let me know how this helps you with your social media habits!
